In the 2024 US presidential election which is set for November 5, abortion has emerged as a crucial issue for both candidates, Kamala Harris, 59, and Donald Trump, 78, as they try to persuade American voters to vote for them.
Just after the first vice-presidential debate between Democrat Tim Walz and Republican JD Vance, Donald Trump made a bold statement on Tuesday, declaring in all-caps that he would veto a federal abortion ban if re-elected to the White House.
“EVERYONE KNOWS I WOULD NOT SUPPORT A FEDERAL ABORTION BAN, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, AND WOULD, IN FACT, VETO IT, BECAUSE IT IS UP TO THE STATES TO DECIDE BASED ON THE WILL OF THEIR VOTERS (THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE!),” Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, wrote in all-caps on X (formerly Twitter).
“LIKE RONALD REAGAN BEFORE ME, I FULLY SUPPORT THE THREE EXCEPTIONS FOR RAPE, INCEST, AND THE LIFE OF THE MOTHER. I DO NOT SUPPORT THE DEMOCRATS’ RADICAL POSITION OF LATE-TERM ABORTION, LIKE, AS AN EXAMPLE, IN THE 7TH, 8TH, OR 9TH MONTH OR, IN CASE THERE IS ANY QUESTION, THE POSSIBILITY OF EXECUTION OF THE BABY AFTER BIRTH. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!”, he continued.
Although Trump has repeatedly stated that he would not sign a federal abortion ban, during the first presidential debate with Kamala Harris, he refrained from committing to vetoing such a ban, arguing instead that he “wouldn’t have to”.
Abortion has become a central issue in the 2024 race, with Harris holding an advantage on the topic. This has contributed to her growing support among female voters across the country, particularly in swing states.
In contrast, Trump has attempted to cast himself as a “protector” of women, claiming that women wouldn’t be “thinking about abortion” if he is elected.
Shortly after Trump’s post on X, Elon Musk shared it, commenting, “Could not be more clear that @realDonaldTrump WILL veto a national abortion ban. He has said it before many times, but this simple statement makes his position absolutely obvious and unequivocal.”
